⚡ About Amber
Amber is an entirely different way to buy and sell power, designed for a world powered by renewable energy. We give customers direct access to the real-time wholesale electricity price as it varies every 5 minutes, and the technology to shift more of their energy usage to the times when cheaper renewables are available in the grid. It's a cheaper way to buy power, a smarter way to sell power, and the fastest way for Australia to reach 100% renewable energy.
We are a clear category leader in Australia for home battery automation and are growing rapidly (over 80k customers). We have also expanded into licensing our core technology to utilities overseas, including a partnership with E.ON Next in Europe.
Amber is backed by top Australian and international investors including Square Peg, Main Sequence, Breakthrough Victoria, Commonwealth Bank, NRMA, Gentrack, ETF Partners (UK/Europe based), and E.ON Next.
We are scaling rapidly and you'd be joining a team of over 200 committed to building a diverse, inclusive, and purpose-driven culture as we transform a major industry.
Our products are reshaping home energy: Amber for Batteries cuts bills by exporting stored energy at wholesale prices of up to $19/kWh, and Amber for EVs enables the cheapest, cleanest charging. In 2026, we will push this even further with our new vehicle-to-grid (V2G) technology, while also scaling our offering to other utilities.
💻 About the role
Want to help improve the environment by shifting Australia and the world's energy usage towards renewables?
Amber provides a great opportunity to apply your skills as an Product and people leader to help enable the uptake of renewable energy. Our technology optimises thousands of batteries and other devices in our customers' homes, enabling them to time their usage to consume power at times of high renewable penetration (and cheap prices), and then export power back to the grid at critical times - letting them outbid coal and gas generators and earn potentially >$100 in an afternoon.
The product we've built here is increasingly the template for what dynamic pricing and home energy automation can look like everywhere. The opportunity in front of us is to take that and scale it globally, licensing our core technology to utilities around the world so that their customers get the same access to flexible, intelligent energy that Amber customers in Australia enjoy today.
We're looking for a Director of Product to join Amber's executive team, reporting directly to CEO Chris Thompson and sitting as a peer to Director of Engineering Matt Sain. This is a growth role; The person will help shape Amber's core product offering as we move from one market to many, and from one brand to a platform that powers utilities around the world.
The Amber product team develops and supports:
- Home automation integrations (solar, batteries, EVs, and V2G coming soon) that control electricity usage in response to pricing and renewable availability
- Mobile & Web apps for customers to monitor and manage their energy usage
- A pricing and billing engine for real-time energy pricing
- The marketing site and associated tools to drive customer growth
- Our licensed technology platform, powering a growing number of utility partners across Europe and beyond
The core product team is accountable for getting that solution everywhere. Amber's product is the most mature instance of it, and a continued proving ground for what great looks like. The mandate of this role is bigger than any single brand: it's to build a core product that can power many utilities.
We think this role has two distinct responsibilities. The first is building the systems that build the product: the right practices, rituals, PM talent, and cross-functional muscle to keep a growing product function coherent and high-quality as we scale. The second is locking in on where we're going: shape Amber's product vision and holding the line on it. We're looking for someone who understands that strategic alignment isn't the same as doing whatever is being told.
We can imagine many pathways to success in this role. We expect whoever is successful to care deeply about their people, the craft of building great products, and delivering real-world outcomes. We're also looking for a leader who sets a clear enough direction that good decisions happen without them in every room; Someone who builds capability in those around them rather than becoming a bottleneck.
Skills & Qualifications
- 2+ years experience as a senior product leader managing PMs while reporting into the exec, or as a manager-of-managers in a product function
- 5+ years of relevant commercial product experience across consumer technology, marketplace, or platform products at a similar growth stage (Series B/C and beyond)
- Proven ability to set product strategy and communicate it clearly across an organisation, not just to the product team
- A track record of raising the quality of product management around you, through hiring, coaching, or the systems you've put in place
- Experience building products that operate across multiple markets, brands, or customer segments is a strong plus
Responsibilities
- Own the direction, goals, and quality of Amber's core product — pricing, devices, and core customer experiences — and managing the PMs, structure and organisation within it
- Shape the core product to serve a growing number of retail and utility partners around the world, not just Amber's own brand
- Define and maintain Amber's product vision and strategy
- Act as a partner to Matt Sain, align product and engineering priorities and ways of working
- Mature our product practices — roadmapping, discovery, goal-setting — to match our current scale and ambition
- Continue to build a product culture of clarity, accountability, and craft
🌈 If this kind of work gets you excited, we'd love to hear from you!
Even if you don’t meet 100% of the requirements listed above, we still encourage you to apply. We're open to all backgrounds and encourage people from underrepresented groups to apply. We never discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, or disability status.
