AI Engineer
UpGuard
Software Engineering, Data Science
Sydney, NSW, Australia
We’re looking for a hands-on, ambitious AI Engineer who loves building. Someone who sees messy, manual processes and instinctively wants to automate, optimise, and scale them using AI.
In this role, you’ll sit at the intersection of AI, automation, and business operations, turning complex workflows into intelligent, scalable systems. You’ll work closely with teams across the business and own problems end-to-end, from discovery through to deployment.
What will you do?
Design and build AI-powered automations that solve real operational problems
Create workflows using tools like n8n, Claude & Gemini and integrate LLM-powered solutions into business processes
Proficient in Python and/or JavaScript, cloud platforms (GCP preferred), APIs (auth, pagination, webhooks), LLMs (prompting, RAG, agents), automation tools (n8n, Make, etc.), and SQL (e.g. BigQuery)
Experiment quickly, iterate, and ship improvements continuously
Work closely with teams across Finance, Sales, CS, Legal, Marketing, People, Product, and Security to understand and map how work is currently done.
Map current (As-Is) and future (To-Be) workflows, identifying inefficiencies and opportunities for automation
Translate business problems into clear technical approaches and solutions
Define success metrics, design test cases, and ensure high-quality delivery
Work with APIs, webhooks, and internal systems to connect tools and orchestrate workflows
Build scalable, reliable automation pipelines that reduce manual effort
Manage your own backlog of problems and opportunities
Turn ambiguous pain points into clearly defined and well-structured problems, then drive them through to resolution.
Create simple, effective documentation and guides for new tools and automations
Help teams adopt what you build and continuously improve based on feedback

- Strong hands-on ability with Python and/or JavaScript, and comfort working across APIs, webhooks, and system integrations
- Experience or strong familiarity with AI/LLMs (prompting, RAG, agents) and a curiosity for pushing their real-world applications
- A natural bias toward building, you enjoy turning messy, manual processes into simple, automated systems that scale
- Experience with workflow automation tools (n8n, Make, Zapier, or similar) and an instinct for process optimisation
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to take ambiguous business problems and turn them into clear, shippable technical solutions
